A fantastic and very bright apartment in the Spaarndammerbuurt neighbourhood, adjacent to Zaanhof, one of the prettiest courtyards of the many that grace Amsterdam. With its greenery, restrictions on car use, and abundance of birds, this part of the city, this neighbourhood, is a hidden gem. Its attraction has been all the more enhanced thanks to the development of the Houthavens area.
LAYOUT
Entrance via the communal staircase, spacious hall, cupboard for energy meters, floating toilet, three bedrooms, the largest of which has sliding doors that open out onto the balcony, bathroom with two-person sink, second floating toilet, shower and bath, large living room with windows on three sides, open kitchen (with a fridge-freezer, oven, and extractor hood), balcony (with cupboard), storage space that also houses the boiler and has connections for a washing machine. See the floorplan for the exact layout.
The apartment is part of a magnificent building, a corner house, as a result of which it has windows on no fewer than three sides and welcomes the sun all day! It is situated on the third floor; by Amsterdam standards, the staircase is very spacious. The whole apartment is heated by energy-efficient and comfortable underfloor heating. The floor itself has oak parquet flooring that is particularly suitable for this type of heating. The property includes a sizeable and fully equipped kitchen and bathroom, both dating from 2011. Thanks to the numerous windows in their hardwood frames, the French balconies at the front, and the balconies at the rear, this apartment exudes a bright and luxurious ambience. From the living room and from the balconies at the rear, you can enjoy the wonderful views of the Zaanhof.
The building was renovated to a very high standard in 2011, including the foundations, the roof, and the staircase.
LOCATION
The Zaanhof is a green, park-like courtyard, surrounded by charming dwellings, behind which are high elegant buildings with towers. Oostzaanstraat is a wide tree-lined street, with restrictions on the use of cars. Just along the same street is the ‘Arbeiderspaleis Het Schip’, which houses the museum of that name, featuring the Amsterdam School style of architecture. It marks the architectural high point of the Spaarndammerbuurt neighbourhood and of one of the founders of the Amsterdam School, Michel de Klerk. This brilliant architect also designed Blok 1 and Blok 2, situated on the delightful Spaarndammerplantsoen, surrounded by poplar trees, opposite Het Schip. The Spaarndammerbuurt is characterised by a wealth of superb architecture, featuring many enclosed gardens, courtyards, and parks. An oasis of tranquillity in the city!
Cultuurpark Westerpark, including the Westergasfabriek, is a mere five-minute walk away. Spaarndammerdijk takes you to the northern side of Westerpark, near the picturesque and pleasantly peaceful ‘Ons Genoegen’, a local city farm. There is nowhere inside the A10 Ring Road that is more rural!
Towards the River IJ, the Houthavengebied area has recently undergone an extensive programme of development. Where in the past giant cargo ships came to unload their logs from all over the world, there is now an attractive residential island district. The Houthaven has been transformed from an industrial site to a remarkable residential area on seven green islands, almost car-free. Together, the Spaarndammerbuurt and the Houthavens form a wonderful, diverse, green, and child-friendly community. Through traffic, which previously passed along Spaarndammerdijk, now runs under Houthavenpark through a tunnel towards the A10 Ring Road.
Central Station, Westelijke Eilanden, and the Jordaan can be reached easily by public transport or by bike. A 30km per hour speed limit was recently introduced for the whole area, including Oostzaanstraat. One drawback is that of the parking charges: the ever-greater popularity of the neighbourhood has been accompanied by a sharp increase in these charges, which are now comparable to those of the city centre. Fortunately, parking permits are easy to obtain.
